Specialist Soundproof Plasterboard for Part E Building Regulations Compliance

In noise polluted homes or workplaces it is important to find practical ways to help address the many different problems, it is possible to achieve a peaceful environment with the right solution in place, although you may also be looking for something that is suited for tightly spaced environments.

MuteBoard™ 4 is slim, practical and high in acoustic performance, and this means that you can use it from anything for the reduction of the common household noises when applied directly to brick, block or stud frames, or even elevated noise issues that can range from clearly heard conversation to electronics in operation when installing on to an isolated stud frame.

To achieve the best possible solution for soundproofing, you will need to incorporate them into what is called ‘Systems’, and it is here you will find MuteBoard™ 4 in a range of options. These offer ways of increasing acoustic performance by fitting them to decoupled stud frames, internal stud frames to split multiple rooms, or when you need to be conservative with space – directly installing them to your brick/block wall.

Information

  • 1200mm x 1200mm x 27mm.
  • A hand-made product that may require trimming off excess.
  • For improving issues with airborne noise on the walls only.
  • Application to both concrete and timber structures.
  • Easy to apply a plaster skim layer directly.
  • Compliant with both Part E Building Regulations (England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) and Building Standards Technical Handbook 2017 for Scotland for impact transmission.*

Noise is subjective, and this means that what could be a problematic noise for you, is not for others, and the level of disruption will depend on what level of sensitivity you have to a specific sound or event. Acoustic issues differ for homes or workplaces, but it is our MuteBoard™ 4 that offers flexibility across your requirements for performance, cost and thickness.

Our most dense and highest performing of the MuteBoard™ range is our MuteBoard™ 4, it is a four-ply soundproof material, that comprises of two layers of Mass Loaded Vinyl at both two and four millimetres, each provides a level of damping, this means that due to its flexible mass it will help to break down vibration energy positively from rigid materials. Bonded between the mass layers is a six-millimetre closed cell foam, this helps to provide a degree of decoupling from the structure. We bond these mattings to soundproof plasterboard which is then ready for skim and plastering. You will find Acoustic Plasterboard throughout the soundproofing world, and we incorporate this into many of our acoustic systems and products, and it is its increased mass over standard plasterboard that makes it more efficient.

MuteBoard™ 4 is part of the MuteRange core – these products are subjected to stringent testing in both laboratory and real-world environments providing the best possible solution for the purpose with a result you can trust.

You can find out more about our all-encompassing MuteRange by clicking on the icon below if you are interested in stocking or specifying our range for projects now and in the future, get in contact with us!

MuteBoard™ 4 is our best performing single acoustic panel that can be installed directly to brick and block walls, or you can also fit them to a new existing or new stud framing of both metal and timber. Each board requires multiple fixings per board and is an excellent space-saving method for soundproofing against low to mid-level noises in the home or for sound proofing an office to where airborne noise is an issue, and this includes medium level conversations and or light television use. You can improve this by installing on to a new stud frame fixed away from the existing partition and installing acoustic mineral wool in the newly created cavity. You can find all systems MuteBoard™ 4 is featured in by clicking on the systems tab next to the FAQs here.
MuteBoard™ 4 cannot be used to soundproof a ceiling, and the blue cross-linked foam is not suitable for a ceiling installation where fire regulations are concerned, we have a range of high performing ceiling soundproofing products to suit different requirements, you can learn more here.
You can apply MuteBoard™ 4 in a variety of different ways to help improve the acoustic performance, but it is always recommended to use acoustic mineral wool between any adjacent cavities to reduce ‘flanking transmission’ which can affect the overall performance. Sound will always find its way to an open cavity if a clear path permits it, going around the MuteBoard™ 4 and appearing in one of these cavities.
MuteBoard™ 4 is a hand laminated product which uses a tack adhesive to bond materials together; it is not suitable for installation with an adhesive as the mass would pull apart the tack, we only mechanical fixings with MuteBoard™ 4.
Mute Board™ 4 cannot be installed on the floor as the acoustic plasterboard may suffer from cracking under pressure and will not help to accommodate any fluctuation in joist height, again leading to possible breaking of materials. We have a whole range of floor soundproofing solutions which you can view here.
Our guidance recommends the use of Nylon HammerFix 80mm when applying to brick and block walls, additional advice from a structural engineer of professional equal would be best sought with if there are any concerns, we do supply these fixings but are not included with the purchase of MuteBoard™ 4.
Reverberation is an issue that affects sound internally and is not related to sound proofing in the sense that it requires something dense to reduce noise moving from room-to-room – it is about improving the sound in a single space. A sports hall would be a classic example of reverberation when somebody speaks they will attempt to shout over the noise, and as the clashing of sound bounces off the hard and reflective surface, this leads to the speech becoming unintelligible. MuteBoard™ 4 is a dense product that will reflect the sound and will not work against treating this issue, for this, we offer a range of sound absorption materials to help with this issue in a wide range of applications including at home, in the office or hospitality environments including restaurants, nightclubs and cafés.
Fixing materials through the MuteBoard™ 4 creates a direct path for the sound to travel back through and could crack the plasterboard in a way that makes it a less effective sound proofing system. With light fixtures and plug fixtures, we would recommend where possible to relocate them to another wall with the advice of a registered electrician under Part P of the Building Regulations to ensure the most effective sound proofing. MuteBoard™ 4 has a lining applied over the top ready for skim and plastering. We would recommend the skim plaster layer applied before any decoration as it can be highly absorbent and will help to reduce small air gaps in the system. We recommend the use of Acoustic Socket Box Inserts anywhere you need to install sockets.

MuteBoard™ 4 can be installed used for soundproofing wet rooms and bathrooms but would require the addition of a moisture board to stop direct moisture coming into contact with the acoustic plasterboard and causing possible damage to the material.

Seek advice from a Damp or Bathroom fitting specialist before purchasing; we can work with such specialists to ensure the right combination of both sound proofing and damp proof materials are applied. The Cross-Linked PE Foam in the MuteBoard™ 4 does not absorb moisture, nor is it prone to fungal or other damp related issues that affect chip foam.

Installation Guide

All of our MuteBoard™ series are handmade at our warehouse and with this, there may be some slight overhang – this can easily be trimmed with a Stanley knife to make sure the MuteBoard™ butt up together tightly.

You will want to make sure that the surface you are applying to is flat to avoid any joints unsuccessfully matching up. A rendering of walls will help to not only create a level wall but to patch up significant gaps in the mortar and create a stronger surface to apply MuteBoard™ 4.

When affixing MuteBoard™ 4, you will want to use heavy duty fixings with 9 per board and remember to leave a 2-5mm gap from the adjacent surfaces.

Fix MuteBoard™ 4 with tapered edge vertically.

Fill all gaps, including the abutting of all joints and around the perimeter. The aim to make sure the surface is as airtight as possible as you are trying to reduce airflow that airborne noise transfers through, even the smallest of gaps.

MuteBoard™ 3 is our readymade, hand-laminated acoustic panel that can be easily installed direct to brick and block walls and can also be fitted to improve standard stud walls both of timber and metal frameworks. Each board requires multiple fixings per board and is an excellent space-saving method for soundproofing against low-level noise at home or to soundproof an office, and it is best used for when airborne noises are an issue which includes the reduction of low to middle volumes of conversations or reduction of television usage. MuteBoard™ 3 should not be used to sound proof a ceiling, and the blue cross-linked foam is not suitable for a ceiling installation where fire regulations are concerned, we have a range of ceiling soundproofing options available as alternatives. With Fire Regulations, you will want to discuss the use of our acoustic materials with Building Control so that they can be signed off appropriately.

Whether you find that random conversation or light household use enters your home, or you are looking to put together a solution for a workplace environment that is effective and easy to install, MuteBoard™ 2 will be a great addition.

As a two-ply soundproof material, MuteBoard™ 2 comprises of a layer Tecsound SY70, and we use its self-adhesive backing to bond it to a high-density acoustic grade of soundproof plasterboard, one that is ready for skim and plastering. Both of these acoustic materials is of high value for sound control. Tecsound is a visco-elastic material that is high in mass, and mass is a crucial component in the reduction of airborne noise, and its flexible, non-rigid properties assist in decoupling from the applied surface to lessen the transfer of vibration. You will find acoustic plasterboard throughout the soundproofing world, and we incorporate this into many of our acoustic systems and products, and it is its increased mass over standard plasterboard that makes it more efficient.

MuteBoard™ 2 is our acoustic panel that is easily installed to either directly to brick and block walls, or fitted on to an existing or new stud framing. Each board requires multiple fixings across each board and is a great space-saving option for low-level interruptions for sound proofing the home or office against airborne noise, low-level conversations and or light television usage are two examples of how MuteBoard™ 2 can be used. You can improved performance by installing on an additional stud frame that is separated from the existing partition and using acoustic mineral wool to create a sound insulated stud frame. You can find all systems MuteBoard™ 2 is featured in by clicking on the systems tab next to the FAQs here.
MuteBoard™ 2 is a suitable solution to sound proof a ceiling where issues with ceiling height are at an absolute premium with noise issues that fall into the background noise level category, the use of acoustic mineral wool is important between any joists, battens and adjacent wall cavities to ensure the best acoustic performance.
With Mute Board™ 2 various upgrades can be made to increase the effectiveness of sound proofing. One consideration that is often neglected is the use of acoustic mineral wool between adjacent cavities, these can be stud frame walls adjacent to the wall or between flooring and ceiling joists as a few examples – we would always recommend these to be put in place to reduce what is called ‘flanking transmission’. Fitting MuteBoard™ 2 on to a dedicated stud frame will help drastically improve performance for more problematic noise issues where space is a concern or a specific budget has been allocated to where MuteClip® or other alternatives are not possible.
We advise not to fix MuteBoard™ 2 with adhesive, and this is because of the visco elastic backing will not receive adhesives for a strong bond to the majority of structural materials, this is because the mesh lining that holds together the visco-elastic is not porous, it also contains a high mass.
Mute Board™ 2 has plasterboard facing that risks breaking under pressure from footfall or heavy furniture, and with uneven flooring, this will lead to further damage with cracking appearing in the board. Dedicated options are available for sound proofing a floor that would fair better than the installation of MuteBoard™ 2.
Our guidance recommends the use of Nylon HammerFix 60mm when applying to brick and block walls; we recommend additional advice from a structural engineer or professional with any concerns, we do supply these fixings we do not include these with the purchase of MuteBoard™ 2.
Fixing anything through the MuteBoard™ 2 will create a direct path for the sound to travel back through and could potentially crack the plasterboard in a way that makes it less effective.
