Noise Impact Assessment for a Mixed-Use Sports and Leisure Development in Essex

NOVA Acoustics was appointed to undertake a noise impact assessment for the proposed redevelopment of an existing sports and social facility. The scheme included enhancements to outdoor sports areas, clubhouse amenities, and site infrastructure.

Given the site’s proximity to residential properties, acoustic performance was a key consideration in supporting the planning application and ensuring the development would be compatible with its surroundings.

Scope of Acoustic Works

The assessment conducted by NOVA Acoustics considered a wide range of potential noise sources and their impact on nearby sensitive receptors. This included:

  • Outdoor sports activities
  • Internal entertainment noise
  • External patron areas
  • Vehicle movements
  • Mechanical plant installations

Baseline environmental noise surveys were carried out, and predictive modelling was used to assess the acoustic implications of the proposed development under various operational scenarios.

Design Integration

NOVA Acoustics worked closely with the design team to ensure that acoustic considerations were embedded into the architectural and operational plans. This included:

  • Evaluating the acoustic implications of outdoor sports use and recommending operational controls
  • Assessing entertainment noise breakout and advising on envelope performance and sound limiting systems
  • Reviewing external seating areas and proposing screening solutions to manage patron noise
  • Analysing vehicle movement patterns and their contribution to overall site noise
  • Setting noise limits for mechanical plant to ensure compliance with relevant standards

The design approach was informed by national policy frameworks and industry best practice, with emphasis on achieving acceptable noise levels across all site operations.

Outcome

The assessment demonstrated that, with appropriate mitigation and management measures in place, the proposed development could operate without causing significant adverse noise impacts. Most scenarios were found to fall within acceptable thresholds, supporting a positive planning outcome. A noise management plan was also developed to guide ongoing operational practices and ensure continued compliance.
