More Information
Our MuteMat™ materials in our floor soundproofing range may require an adhesive, primarily when there are questions of Building Control and the requirement for passing Part E Building Regulations. You will want to confirm with either Building Control or your testing engineer on whether you require to fix your soundproofing materials to the sub-floor so that they exist as ‘Fabric of the Structure’.
3mm Notched Trowel is an easy to use tool for successfully applying adhesive to both sub-floors, and for timber and soundproofing materials. It is a metal toothed comb design with a wooden handle, easy to clean and long-lasting for using on multiple projects.
These are all uses that require adhesive regardless, and this is to ensure the stability of the floor, examples listed below.
- When you are installing an engineered wood, laminate or other timber floorings.
- When you are installing lino or a luxury vinyl tile like Amtico or Karndean
- Installation of ceramic tiles, or another fragile stone flooring
We have included a more in-depth installation process in our ‘Install’ tab above.

Installation Guide
When installing a Woven Carpet alongside Building Control’s advice under Part E Building Regulations, you will want to confirm the requirement of adhesives. If it mentions that it is to be ‘Fabric of the structure’ or any other term, or specifies the use of adhesive, then you may require the following.
If you are reinstalling the subfloor, make sure you have your Perimeter Flanking Band FB8 in place.
Line perimeter of the room with Carpet Gripper Strip 1.2m Self Adhesive, leave a 2-5mm gap from the ‘Flanking Band’ and apply Acoustic and Intumescent Sealant 900ml.
Bond MuteMat® to the timber floor with a 3mm bed using iKoustic Adhesive Tub 15KG.
Tape all joins.
Apply Woven Carpet over the top, often no adhesive required, and fit to Carpet Gripper Strips.
Apply skirting board by bending and cutting the ‘Flanking Band’ to conceal edges of the Carpet.
These finishes often require an overboard to the MuteMat® to protect the fragile nature of these finishes. It is primarily the concern of the tongue-and-groove fittings on top of a compressible material that we are protecting here. Some may not require an over boarding, but we would advise testing on a small area prior.
If you are reinstalling the subfloor, make sure you have your Perimeter Flanking Band FB8 extended to cover this area, and enough to butt all floor layers.
Bond MuteMat® to the timber floor using iKoustic Adhesive Tub 15KG with a 3mm bed to apply successfully, with the perimeter MuteMat butted against the ‘Flanking Band’.
Tape all joins.
Bond 6mm ply minimum, or 9mm ply if requested, by using iKoustic Adhesive Tub 15KG with a 3mm bed.
Install wooden floor over top. There is often no adhesive required unless specified by the manufacturer, and fit up to ‘Flanking Band.’
These flooring, especially Luxury Vinyl Tile, Vinyl and ‘Lino’, are prone to causing slightly folds and tearing, so we alway recommend these to be bonded to an overboard. Ceramic tiling for example will often require a mortar bed on the top of the overboard, please let us know if you plan to use these materials in advance to assure there is not additional requirements for successful installation.
If the subfloor is to be reinstalled, make sure you have your Perimeter Flanking Band FB8 extended to cover this area, and enough to allow all floor layers to abutt to.
Bond MuteMat® to the timber floor using iKoustic Adhesive Tub 15KG with a 3mm bed to apply successfully, with the perimeter MuteMat butted against the ‘Flanking Band’, tape all joins.
